Surveys have shown that helmet use is essentially 100% in places with all-rider motorcycle helmet laws compared to 34 to 54% at locations with no helmet laws or with age-specific helmet laws. All-rider laws significantly increase helmet use because they are easy to enforce due to the rider's high visibility.

Currently, Arkansas employs an age-specific helmet law for all motorcyclists on the road under the age of 21. 62% of all motorcycle related fatalities in Arkansas were riders who were not wearing helmets. While having any helmet law at all is a step in the right direction, the statistics show that more lives would be protected if that law were simply expanded

Also, since helmets cut down on the wind and other distractions, the rider becomes more alert when riding. This fact voids one of the major arguments against helmet use.

What to look for in a motorcycle helmet?

v Firstly, you need to make sure that you can see enough of the surrounding area to be safe. Visibility is a major concern to watch out for, not everybody is the same!

v Choose a color that stands out so you can be seen easily by cars and other vehicles you may share the road with.

v It should fit your head snugly all around.

v The straps should be strong with two rings to fasten. Snaps should be avoided since they can come undone in an accident.

v Look for the SNELL approval when purchasing a helmet.

v Your head should be able to support the helmet easily, so it should be lightweight.

v The lining should be comfortable enough to wear for long periods.

v This helmet should have a decent amount of EPS to absorb any impact you may incur.
